Stake dice house edge and payouts explained

By the StakeDices team · Updated

Stake dice has a 1% house edge, which means a 99% return to player (RTP). The edge is built into the payout: for any win chance you choose, the payout is 99 divided by the win chance. At 49.5% you get 2x, at 33% you get 3x, at 1% you get 99x.

Because the edge is the same at every setting, no win chance is 'better' in expected value. What changes is variance: how often you win and how large the swings are.

Payout and recovery table

The table below shows the payout for common win chances and the minimum increase on loss needed for one win to recover all previous losses (100 ÷ (payout − 1)).

What 1% means over a session

The house edge applies to the amount wagered, not to your balance. The expected loss of a session is roughly 1% of everything you wager. Auto bet wagers fast: a session that wagers 10,000 has an expected cost of about 100, even if the balance only ever held a few hundred.

That is why high-volume strategies need a real edge in risk management (stop rules, sizing) rather than a belief that a setting beats the math.

Why high win chances feel safe but are not

At 98% you win almost every roll, but each win pays only 1.0102x. A single loss wipes out about 98 wins. Recovering it in one roll needs a 9,800% increase on loss. The losses are rarer, but each one is far more expensive relative to the profit per win.

At the other end, 1% chance pays 99x but you will regularly see hundreds of losses in a row. Both extremes have the same 1% edge; they just distribute the pain differently.

Using the edge in your planning

  • Estimate the cost of a session as 1% of the planned wager volume.
  • Pick the win chance by the variance you can handle, not by the payout you like.
  • Size bets with the loss streak calculator, which uses the same 99 ÷ chance payout.
  • Compare with other Stake Originals: Mines also returns 99%. See the Mines calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Stake dice?

99%. The house edge is 1%, applied through the payout formula 99 ÷ win chance.

Can a strategy beat the house edge on Stake dice?

No betting pattern changes the expected value of independent rolls. Strategies change variance, session length and how losses are distributed. Good ones focus on bet sizing and stop rules.

Is the house edge the same for over and under?

Yes. Rolling over or under with the same win chance gives the same payout and the same 1% edge.

18+ only. Gambling involves risk; every Stake dice roll has a 1% house edge and results are never guaranteed. See our responsible gambling page.
